In 1999 the first Bakkerswinkel (The Bakery) was opened in Amsterdam on the Roelof Hartstraat. The large storefront window immediately invites you to step into the cosy, bright lunchroom. There is a large counter at the entrance, filled with homemade jams, scones, croissants and all sorts of sourdough bread. The big reading table, and smaller tables all around, fill up the rest of the space. De Bakkerswinkel in South is first and foremost a proper neighbourhood-lunchroom. Locals have been coming here for years for breakfast, a quick cup of coffee before going to work or their lunch appointment with a friend. The counter has right from the beginning also been a ‘corner shop’ selling bread and croissants among other things.
Since the opening of the Taartenwinkel (Cake Shop) on the corner at number 80 the range of products has become even broader. Delicious sweet and savoury pastries are on sale at the shop two doors up.
